- The USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspections Service (APHIS), Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) Pink Bollworm Rearing Facility (PBWRF), Phoenix, AZ, has a requirement for air carrier service for daily delivery of live sterile pink bollworm moths to El Paso, Texas (up to 14 shipping cases per day) and Bakersfield, California (up to 6 shipping cases per day) and timely return (within 3 days) of the empty PBW shipping boxes to the Phoenix, Arizona airport. Moths are packed in insulated PBW shipping boxes (16x16x22) with blue ice to maintain a constant temperature of 40 degrees. Each shipping box contains approximately 1,000,000 (1 million) moths and will weigh 55 pounds when full. Delivery is to the destination airport cargo or baggage area for pickup. Total number of hours moths can survive in shipping cases is 12 hours. Length of service will be a minimum of 152 continuous days to as much as 158 continuous shipping days.
