Description
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is seeking a conservator to restore an original plaster model of the sculpture ?Sentinels of Safety?. In 1925, President Herbert Hoover announced the The Sentinels of Safety awards to promote an increased commitment to mine safety and to the continuing development of effective accident prevention programs. This is the oldest established awards for occupational safety in the United States. All active and intermittently active mineral mining operations that are required to report injury and employment data under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 are eligible to participate in the program. Eight separate groups, consisting of mining operations having similar characteristics, are identified for the program. A bonze trophy is awarded to the winners of the award in each of the eight categories. These mining operations retain custody of the award for one year, when it is transferred to the following year?s winning operation. The Mine Safety and Health Administration has the original plaster model used to cast the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy. This plaster model is approximately two feet in height and has suffered considerable damage over the years and is in need of conservation/restoration. Conservation work required on the plaster model includes; removal of dust, dirt, and grime from all surfaces using appropriate conservation quality cleaning agents; removal of stains, including tape residue, red marker, and other stained areas; securing the statues structure and any unstable or loose plaster fragments or detached glazing, Restoration work may include a ?first level? restoration consisting of the cosmetic treatment of the sculpture to fill and restore the surface area to original condition. Interested parties are to provide their qualifications, experience and membership in any relevant associations by COB Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Responses may be forwarded by email to Robert N Beaty, Contracting Officer, at beaty.robert@dol.gov or by fax at 202-693-9826. This notice is for information purposes only and is not a solicitation. However, if MSHA elects to issue a solicitation for these services, the distribution of any such solicitation shall be limited to those parties responding to this sources sought notice as well as those sources already known to the contracting officer.
