Description
The Office of Naval Research is soliciting proposals for development and transition of aircraft nondestructive inspection (NDI) technologies for detection/quantification of heat damage in composites designed to reduce operations and support cost without compromising fleet safety and readiness. The primary area of interest is to inspect/assess incipient damage in composites on aircraft components without removing paint during on-condition or scheduled periodic inspections. The rapidly increasing inspection hours per flight hour can be ascribed to the detrimental impact of materials damage on aging aircraft structural components, a condition that has been widely recognized for years. Accordingly, there is a need for portable NDI technology that can be used on an operational aircraft in an uncontrolled environment and provides reliable and reproducible data that can be used to identify/assess heat damaged materials and is capable of performing measurements on aircraft in small compartments with limited access. Application of this device must be as non-intrusive as possible, result in a significant reduction in inspection and processing time over current inspection methods, and have a false alarm rate approaching zero. The device should be easy to handle in normal field conditions. The data collected by this inspection device must enable technicians to interpret information, characterize the problem, and recommend proper maintenance actions.
