Description
The combining of waste and glass additives takes place in a rectangular steel box called a melter where the temperatures reach 1100?C. The Low Activity Waste (LAW) melters are approximately 12? wide x 25? long x 16? high and the High Level Waste (HLW) melters are approximately 6? wide x 8? long x 7? high. The two LAW melters and two HLW melters will be simultaneously assembled on the site prior to commissioning. During the assembly of each melter, refractory is added. This specialized brick (some pieces exceeding 1500 lbs) acts as the containment for the molten glass. During Melter assembly, the refractory subcontractor will be responsible for the rigging and installation of fused-cast refractory (government furnished equipment) and the back-up layers of refractory (purchased by the subcontractor), and the design and construction of all shoring and framework, patterns and molds needed to place the floor and fixed wall castables for all four melters. Subcontractor will be required to perform bake-out of some of the castable refractory. Subcontractor will provide qualified personnel and equipment to handle and install the refractory in accordance with Project drawings and specifications. Subcontractor will procure materials such as cribbing, tyvek tape and sheeting, insulating paper, board, and adhesive, and castable refractory materials (e.g. Alfrax 66, Kaolite 2500 LI, and Versaflow 57A). Prior to the start of work, Subcontractor will be required to submit (1) procedures describing refractory installation and rigging methods and (2) personnel qualifications for work to be performed. It is estimated that work will be performed over a two-year period. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS REQUIRED (1) Forklift and operator (2) Back-up refractory (Zirmul Alumina-Zirconia-Silica [AZS]) (3) Rigging equipment for the refractory (crane & operator provided by the Project) (4) Material for the shoring and framework (5) Materials as identified above (6) Castable Refractory mixing and finishing equipment.
