It was determined that the old 4 inch system already inst alled by this company in the old Clinical Center and the ACR F was not large enough to meet existing needs and, therefore would be completely inappropriate once the CRC was added in to the mixture. This is one of the reasons for the increase to the larger size pneumatic tube systems. Once this decisio n was made, it became important to try and have the systems in all areas of the Clinical Center comminicate with each ot her via the tube system. Our existing system was old and hav ing problems and it was decided that as, and if, funding bec ame available, the newer, better technology 6 inch system wo uld be expanded into the various departments in the ACRF and then into the Clinical Center itself. In order to ensure th at there is seamless delivery via this system, it is essenti al that all elements be installed by the same vendor. All of the tube stations must be able to communicate and this requ ires that they all have the same proprietary software. Also, with the building of the CRC, Clinical Center management ha s realized the value in standardization of equipment. Standa rdization provides the very best way of ensuring that all em ployees are trained and comfortable with the one system (and not having to try and remember a number of methods of opera tion); it also saves the Government money in that only parts for one manufacturer must be stocked. Our government repair personnel will be in better position to intervene for any e mergencies if they only have to train and be proficient on o ne type of system.
