NAICS Code: 541710 NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT LABORATORY SERVICES TO BE HIRED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is XN3429 (RFQ - PR-RT-04-00941). The Mid-Continent Ecology Division (MED) of the National Health and Environmental Research Laboratory is responsible for EPA's aquatic toxicology mission, as well as studying ecosystem effects of chemical and non-chemical stressors. The student contractor will assist in developing empirical databases with aquatic organisms which serve as the foundation of predictive models used to prioritize chemicals for endocrine disrupting potential. The projects for which the student contractor is needed involves quantitative and qualitative determination of chemical binding potential to steroid hormone receptors of aquatic organisms as an indicator of chemical potential to disrupt endocrine systems. The student will be expected to assist in the preparation of cellular and sub-cellular fractions, incubation and culture media and buffer systems, and to assists in aspects of preparation and analysis of biological samples to confirm competitive binding, and mRNA and protein induction in tissue slices from aquatic organisms. All samples shall be prepared according to the technical requirements as specified in MED protocols. The student will prepare sample tubes, appropriate buffers, and sub-cellular fractions when needed, and will analyze all samples as requested, but the number of samples prepared for analysis will not exceed 120 samples per month. The student will maintain careful and accurate records in a Laboratory Notebook and prepare electronic reports of the data in spreadsheets. The notebook, spreadsheets and all other data produced under this order will be the property of the Environmental Protection Agency. The student must have recently completed or be working toward a B.S. degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, ecology, toxicology, environmental science, or life science and have completed at least 2 years at an accredited college/university. The student must be familiar with basic laboratory health and safety procedures. EPA will provide all necessary computer hardware and software.
