The Forest Service has a need to rehabilitate/reconstruct two (2) fire lookouts on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in central Washington State. (1) The Mt. Bonaparte Lookout (Bldg #4220), constructed in 1961, is located on the Tonasket Ranger District at an elevation of 7258 feet. The lookout is located approximately 20 road miles northeast of Tonasket, Washington. (2) The Goat Peak Lookout (Bldg #4206), constructed in 1950, is located on the Methow Valley Ranger District at an elevation of 7001 feet. The lookout is located approximately 20 road miles northwest of Winthrop, Washington. Both lookouts are wood frame structures (14-15 ft?p square) supported on an open braced wood tower (Mt. Bonaparte Lookout tower is 20 feet high and Goat Peak Lookout tower is 10 feet high). The Mt. Bonaparte Lookout has a flat roof structure and the Goat Peak Lookout has a hipped roof structure with cedar shakes. Wood frame stairs provide access and a 36 inch wide catwalk frames the perimeter of each lookout. Photos of the lookouts can be viewed at: www.firelookout.com/wa.html. Select ??Browse by Alphabetical List?? and find Bonaparte (Mount) and Goat Peak (Okanogan NF). The intent of this project is to repair or replace existing materials "in-kind" or with compatible materials to the extent feasible and to maintain the historic character and appearance of the lookout. The specific work involves: Mt. Bonaparte LO - Replace the existing flat roof with a wood frame pitched hip roof structure including new holddown hardware, reinforce the interior and exterior built-up beams with a new LVL (laminated veneer lumber) joists, reinforce tower girders with corrosion resistant tube steel installed between and bolted to the existing girder members. Goat Peak LO - Replace cedar shake roof and hip flashing, install collar ties with double 2x4??s, remove and replace tower bracing and struts on sides adjacent to mid-span support. On both Lookouts - Replace and paint catwalk handrails and posts, remove and replace all exterior window sills, trim, and blocking with similar material, build and install new shutters, replace the existing door, screen door, tile flooring, and interior blinds. Price Range is between $100,000 and $250,000. Due to the extreme remoteness of the sites, pre-bid meeting is not planned. Estimated start work date is September 7, 2004. This solicitation will be uploaded to www.fedbizopps.gov on or about June 15, 2004.
