Description

The IRS intends to award a sole source contract to Renishaw, Inc (Hoffman Estates, IL) for the acquisition of one (1) Micro-Raman Spectroscopy System for the IRS National Forensic Laboratory. This three (3) laser system will allow the IRS Lab to analyze the chemical components in writing ink, copier toner and paper submitted to the Lab. Currently, the Chemistry Section of the Lab utilizes an analytical technique called "thin layer chromatography" (TLC). TLC, a destructive technique, is used for separation and comparison of the visible and fluorescent components contained in writing ink during the examination of suspected fraudulent documents. At this time, the Lab only conducts visual examinations on copier toner and papers. The acquisition of the Micro-Raman Spectroscopy System will allow the Lab to perform in situ, non-destructive testing on writing ink, copier toner and paper. The Renishaw Micro-Raman Spectroscopy System meets the requirements of the Lab and will allow it to remain technologically current with advances in the forensic science field.
