Description
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to negotiate on a non-competitive basis with the Women's Health Initiative Clinical Coordinating Center (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center) for an extension to the WHI study. Since the initiation of WHI in 1992, a total of 161,809 participants have been recruited, examined and followed in four clinical trials and a companion observational study which focused on evaluating overall risks and benefits of preventive interventions for the major causes of morbidity and mortality among post-menopausal women in the United States. The primary goals of the study are (1) to continue outcomes ascertainment in the WHI Clinical Trial and Observational Study participants and mammography in the Hormone Therapy (HT) trial participants; (2) to maintain the current study database and biologic resource through September 2010; and (3) extend the infrastructure to enable maximal scientific utilization of the resources through September 2010. The statutory authority applicable to this solicitation is 41 U.S.C. 253(c)(1) as set forth in FAR 6.302.1. The incumbents have the unique capability to provide the required services to the NHLBI. See NOTE 22.
