Description
ENERGY DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR HANFORD SITE RIVER CORRIDOR PROCUREMENT The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced next steps for the procurement of services for the closure of the Hanford Site River Corridor, an area of approximately 210 square miles along the Columbia River. DOE has considered the comments received from industry and other interested parties on the draft solicitation for the Hanford Site River Corridor that was issued in December 2003*. DOE received positive commentary overall from industry on the accelerated closure approach and the approaches used to remediate and close the Hanford Site River Corridor. DOE received additional comments on the impact of the draft cleanup schedule on work that the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is performing in facilities located in the Hanford Site River Corridor. In response to the comments, DOE will revise the solicitation to establish a time-phased approach for cleaning up the PNNL-utilized facilities. Changes to the solicitation will assure that the cleanup schedule will not disrupt critical ongoing PNNL activities. DOE will direct the contractor at PNNL to cooperate in that effort. Accordingly, the buildings will not be required to be vacated prior to 2009. We therefore do not anticipate that any PNNL researchers will be displaced from employment. DOE plans to issue a new solicitation for the Hanford Site River Corridor work. DOE plans to cancel the initial solicitation and issue a new solicitation for reasons that include the significant changes that would be required to the initial solicitation and the substantial passage of time since the release of the initial solicitation. Unlike the original solicitation, the new solicitation will provide for full closure of the Hanford Site River Corridor as part of DOE's accelerated cleanup strategy. DOE hopes to issue the final solicitation in April 2004 and to award the contract by fall 2004. The DOE e-center will remain the information source for industry and other interested parties for this important acquisition. This information has been posted on the Hanford Site River Corridor solicitation website, located at http://www.pr.doe.gov/iips/busopor.nsf/. * The prior posting on the DOE E-Center showed the draft solicitation number as ?14556?. The correct number should be ?14655?.
