- Description
- Sandia National Laboratories has described a fiber-optic sensor to detect the interface between a clear liquid and an opaque liquid. The basic concept behind the optical sensor is that different liquids will absorb light at different levels. Once the levels of absorbed light for the specific liquids to be identified can be determined, then the interface between the liquids can be located by the detection of the difference of the levels of light. The location of the interface means the location of the different liquids in question. Sandia?s goal is to apply the sensor to detecting the interface between crude oil and water. Since water generally accompanies the production of crude oil, and the two liquids must be separated before the oil is to be processed into useful fuel sources, the sensor?s successful development has important implications for the oil industry. In the near term, Sandia?s primary focus is in seeking companies interested in partnering opportunities for development of a prototype for this technology. In the longer term, Sandia is interested in partnering with companies for future applications of this technology via licensing or cooperative development agreements.
