Description
The purpose of this RFI is to help the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) plan for future growth by understanding technology and market trends. NERSC expects to continually enhance its computational resources and services. By 2010 these resources are expected to provide at least 100 Tflop/s sustained performance, in an environment much richer in tools and functionality than is available on today's systems. It will also assist in identifying opportunities for collaborative research, evaluation, and development that will allow NERSC to better respond to DOE needs. Examples of areas of interest to NERSC can be found at: http://hpcf.nersc.gov http://www.nersc.gov/projects/gupfs http://ftg.lbl.gov Your response should include: 1. A roadmap of planned HPC system offerings through 2012. The roadmap should include an overview of node architecture, network architecture, and system software. Describe the key design points and innovative features of this system. Please include estimates of key performance metrics -- peak performance, sustained performance, I/O performance, interprocess communication performance, and any other metrics that you think are important. Also include estimates of power consumption, and describe measures taken to reduce power consumption. 2. Explain your current and planned research efforts related to this roadmap. Identify the key research milestones needed for this roadmap to succeed. Identify current and potential partners for these efforts. 3. Describe your current HPC offerings and how they fit into this roadmap. Identify major areas of innovation and identify areas of uncertainty where input or more information about NERSC requirements would be helpful. 4. Describe your strategy for providing high performance global storage. NERSC is pursuing centralized global storage, with high performance to and from all NERSC systems, integration with offline storage, and Grid connectivity. 5. Describe system components related to system administration, resource and accounting management, and high reliability and availability. Which of these exist today? What new software will you be developing? 6. Describe your software support model. High end systems are increasingly relying on open source software to provide key functionality. Do you expect to function as an integrator of existing software, relying to some extent on the original authors, or will your software be developed in-house? Please explain, for the major components of software that would be provided with the system. 7. Identify any areas where collaboration that you would be interested in exploring with NERSC might help to produce a more robust system. NERSC requests responses from companies that develop HPC systems, as well as from developers of high performance parallel storage systems and scalable cluster interconnects. Responses from storage system and interconnect developers should describe arrangements with system vendors to integrate the component into a full HPC system. Responses should not exceed 10 pages. Responses as well as questions about the RFI should be submitted electronically (as an email attachment in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat format) to Lynn Rippe at rfi@nersc.gov. Non-electronic submissions will not be considered. Based on responses to this RFI, NERSC will invite selected respondents to discuss their plans in more detail. NERSC intends to share information collected from this RFI with partner Office of Science laboratories, provided that any necessary non-disclosure agreements are in place.
