Description
NAICS Code: 54199 In accordance with FAR Part 13, the Atmospheric Protection Branch (APB) of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory's Air Pollution, Prevention, and Control Division (APPCD) of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking 1 student or recent graduate with a Masters Degree to provide services under a contractual agreement in support of the Aquatic Stressors project, using Simplified Acquisition procedures. The student contractor will provide field and laboratory support for a project on the environmental impacts of spray-field operations at a hog farm. The student will participate in a series of projects that examine the role of nitrogen transport and deposition in the air and water. The projects involve lab work and occasional field trips for sample collection. The student will facilitate collection and transport of water samples nutrient analysis. The student will collect and prepare samples for analysis according to technical requirements and sample protocol instructions provided by their mentor. Also, the student will participate in projects on the atmospheric contribution of ammonia to terrestrial and aquatic environments. The student will build a reference database and help with routine calibration of chemiluminescence NOx/NH3 monitors and an IR N2O monitor. Laboratory work will also include use of a gas chromatograph to detect N2O In all studies, the student is responsible for maintaining necessary sampling and analysis supplies and alerting the mentor of any needs. The student contractor should possess field and laboratory experience dealing with environmental issues, some prior research experience, and an interest in multi-media research as it pertains to the transformation and distribution of nitrogen, in order to provide these services, as well as a Master's in Earth Science, Environmental Science, or Biology. This work is to begin approximately December 1, 2003, and end approximately November 30, 2004. The duty location is Durham, NC. The work requires site visits to a hog farm year-round. Though the research does not require field work during inclement weather, field conditions vary from extremely hot days in the summer to cold days in the winter. Due to the location of the field site, days involving field work may result in 10-12 hour work days. The hourly rate is commensurate with the level of education and experience, at $20.07/hour. Recent graduates are eligible as long as graduation occurred no more than one year ago. Non-U.S. citizens may be eligible to participate, depending on their immigration status and the applicable regulations of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Service (BCIS), formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
