Description

Non-wilderness portions of both the Bilk Mountain Trail 517 (approx 1.6 miles) and Spook Creek Trail 513 (approx 2 miles) will be offered in 2004. Work will include reconstruction of 4 switchbacks, brushing, tread work, and installation of approx 125 waterbars and 50 drain dips. All work, except the switchback reconstruction, will occur in the existing tread prism. The switchbacks are located approx 3/4 mile from the Elk Mountain Trailhead on Trail 517. This project begins at the end of the Green Mountain Road, Forest Road 285. The trailhead can be accessed from Elk City by following Forest Road 222, Dixie Road, to its intersection with Forest Road 468, Magruder Road, approx 1/2 mile south of the old Red River Ranger Station. Then proceed east on Road 468 to its intersection with Forest Road 285, near milepost 19, turning in a northerly direction for 18 miles of primitive road to the Elk Mountain Trailhead. Trail work starts at the trailhead and follows Trail 517 in a SW direction for approx 1.6 miles to the junction with Trail 513, then proceeds approx 2 miles on Trail 513 ending at the junction with the Meadow Creek Trail 726 at Schwar Creek. Est. price range: $25,000 - $100,000. Est. start work July 2004. INTERESTED QUOTERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW THE SITE THIS FALL, AS THIS PROJECT WILL BE ADVERTISED PRIOR TO SNOWMELT IN 2004.
