Description
The U. S. Army is seeking sources for a conceptual engineering design and process development of the Munitions Cryofracture System portion of a Plasma/Cryofracture Demilitarization System (PCDS) for the demilitarization of military ordnance. The required effort will provide a prototype Plasma/Cryofracture Demilitarization System (PCDS) utilizing cryofracture and plasma arc thermal treatment technology for the complete demilitarization of a variety of conventional ammunition components including high explosive- containing submunitions downloaded from Cluster Bomb Units (CBUs) and 105MM/155MM artillery rounds. The cryofracture process involves the embrittlement of munitions by freezing in liquid nitrogen followed by the fracture of the embrittled munitions by a hydraulic press to fully expose any embedded energetic material, allowing it to be burned. This technology was developed for the demilitarization of small to medium sized, explosive-loaded munitions such as hand grenades, mines, and the sub-munitions found in ICM and CBU projectiles that are traditionally difficult to disassemble, have little recovery value, and have presented problems, such as undesired detonation, when processed in conventional APE-1236 demil incinerators. The cryofracture process also enables valuable materials, or materials that must be disposed of by alternate means, to be separated from munitions items prior to thermal processing of energetic and waste components. Interested sources should send their qualifications to the POC.
