Description
The U.S. Geological Survey intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with Li Cor, Inc., 4421 Superior Street, Lincoln, NE 68504. The proposed contract is for a Portable Photosynthesis System, Model #LI-6400R. The capabilities that make the LI-6400R desirable for our ongoing research concerning the symbiotic associations of endophytic fungi and an array of plant species are: The ability to obtain simultaneous measurements of CO2 and H2O, thereby determining the rate of respiration. The CO2 and H2O analyzers are located in a sensory head, allowing measurements to be made more precisely and efficiently than any competing product. The LI-6400R includes an integrated Leaf Chamber Fluorometer, allowing simultaneous measurement of gas exchange and fluorescence over the same leaf area, and also includes two light sources which allows us to do dynamic photosynthesis and CO2 analyses. No other instrument is known to possess this feature. The ability to precisely control the experimental parameters, including temperature, pressure, air flow and light. This allows more precise measurement than could otherwise be obtained, as well as allowing meaningful comparison of measurements obtained at different times and locations. Much of our ongoing research involves Arabidopsis. Li Cor manufactures a chamber for the LI-6400R specifically designed to optimally measure photosynthesis, fluorescence and respiration in Arabidopsis and plants of similar size. Use of this chamber greatly increases the accuracy and efficiency of measurements. These unique features allow many more measurements to be obtained in a given period of time, than could be obtained with any other known equipment. This will result in significant economic savings to the U.S. Geological Survey. THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR COMPETITIVE PROPOSALS. Information will be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. Determination to compete this requirement is solely within the discretion of the Government; no additional synopsis will be published.
