- Description
- It is the intent of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to negotiate on a sole source basis under authority of FAR 6.302 with University of Arizona Health Sciences Library (UAHSL), Tucson, Arizona to offer two (2) internships in health sciences librarianship to Hispanic and/or Native American students accepted in the Knowledge River Institute program. These internships will promote NLM?s mission to provide support for medical library development and for training of biomedical librarians. The period of performance shall be for a ten (10) month period. Specifically, UAHSL will offer two (2) internships that will provide grounding in health sciences librarianship practice. UAHSL will provide a positive exposure to health sciences librarianship by exposing the interns to the variety inherent in the health sciences environment and by providing collegial support as they learn to deal with possible daunting medical information requests. All interns will receive an orientation to each department at UAHSL. Interns will then work with staff to create a program focusing on reference, outreach, library systems, access or collections services as needed for the academic year. UAHSL shall also sponsor attendance at a regional or national meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA). UAHSL shall provide a member of the UAHSL faculty to serve as a mentor at the meeting. The NLM determined that UAHSL is uniquely qualified to provide the internships. The University has a unique program, the Knowledge River Institute, that focuses on library and information issues from the needs and perspectives of Hispanics and Native Americans. The Knowledge River Institute is concerned with the special interests and needs of Native Americans and Hispanics as graduate students and as the focus of many new specialized courses leading to an MA in Library Science and Information Resources. This is the only library school in the U.S. with such a program focusing specifically on graduate students from Hispanic and Native American cultures. This service will be procured under FAR Part 13 (Simplified Acquisitions.) This is not a Request for Quotations (RFQ), nor is an RFQ available, however, all responsible and responsive sources may submit a proposal that will be considered by the NLM. Firms/Individuals interested in responding to this synopsis must be able to provide the professional services as specified above. Responses should demonstrate the firm/individual?s ability to meet the government?s requirements. Responses are required within 15 (fifteen) calendar days from the publication date of this synopsis. NLM synopsis No. 03-202/NSD shall be noted on all correspondence to this synopsis.
