- A Comparison of Mechanical Fuel Manipulation Techniques and Effects on Understory Vegetation and Soils at Manitou Experimental Forest: The object of this research is to compare the effects of in-the-woods chipping of unmerchantable wood biomass versus mechanical mastication or "chunking" of hte material on subsequent understory vegetation development nd soil nutrient dynamics. It is necessary that the Contractor have equipment available to accomplish these treatments. Specifically such equipment should be capable of harvesting trees up to 18 inches in diameter, then chipping and chunking unmerchantable biomass and scattering the material on-site. The treatment area is located in Teller County, Colorado on the Manitou Experimental Forest. The approximate 45 acre site adjoins the Ridgewood subdivision within the experimental forest. Terrain within the site consists of a series of small, west-sloping draws and intervening ridges with slopes up to 30%. THe site is stocked with a mixture of Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, and Aspen and contains 111 feet squared of basal area/acre. Work will begin later this calendar year, and is recommended that work end by June 1, 2004. The site typically remains snow free through much of the winter. The solicitation for this RFP will be issued on or around August 12, 2003. Copies of the solicitation will be available at http://www.fedbizopps.gov.
