Description
Industries tend to have life cycles which are often based on technology. This research would compare new, growing, and declining industries from the perspective of business turnover and competition with special attention to technology and price shocks as they relate to small business. The researchers would most likely need to determine industry ages (or stages), technology levels by industry (possible using changing shares of skilled workers) and product price changes by industry. A potential model would be to determine the factors that affect the industry firm turnover rate, in addition to other potential models. Industry firm size data is available from the U.S. Census Bureau that could assist with this research (www.sba.gov/advo/stats/data.html, www.census.gov/csd/susb/susb.htm). The dynamic Census data is a potential data source as it contains information on establishment births and closures by firm size in addition to establishment growth and decline information for continuing establishments from 1989 to present with about a two year lag. Another possibility would be using information from Dun & Bradstreet that tracks firms through time. Proposals using the U.S. Census Bureau?s County Business Patterns would most likely not be able to complete this research as it is not a longitudinal database and does not have firm size information. Regardless of the data used, proposals need to present a convincing case for the ability to secure access to data that will complete the project within 12 months. NOTE The Solicitation document will posted 5/28/03 on FEDBIZOPS. No other documents will be issued. Provide four (4) copies of your price and technical data. The latter is to be packaged separately. THIS IS A 100% SMALL BUSINESS SET A-SIDE.
