- Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials Directorate (AFRL/ MLPSO) solicits research proposals for Laser Materials Technology for Countering Optically Guided Missiles. This announcement comes to solicit proposals for research projects aimed at improving non-linear materials and laser materials necessary for the creation of HIGH-ENERGY PULSES OF HIGH BEAM QUALITY LASER LIGHT IN THE BAND IV INFRARED WAVELENGTHS. Suggested improvements are expected to be in the form of (for example), i) improving the basic material properties, such as hardness, transparency, non-linear coefficient, laser damage threshold, and any other relevant basic material qualities. ii) applications of coatings and/or processes intended to improve the performance and raise the laser damage threshold of these materials. iii) surface modifications intended to improve the performance and raise the laser damage threshold of these materials. The proposed materials must be sufficiently mature to allow for a direct transition to commercial production and direct incorporation in optical devices at the end of the contract period (3 years). The suggested materials should be already demonstrated as device-functional.
