Description
Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, New Mexico) has developed technology that simulates the process whereby experts from different domains interact to reach a collective decision. For this technology, individual computational models are developed for specific individuals with expertise in certain domains or disciplines. These models simulate the processes whereby an expert applies their unique knowledge and experience to interpret data, situations or event. Validation studies have shown that computer models developed using associated methods for expert knowledge elicitation respond in a manner consistent with the actual expert with an accuracy of approximately 90%. With a Cognitive Collective, cognitive models for different experts interact and in some cases, the collective recognizes a pattern where cues are insufficient for a pattern to emerge with any of the individual expert models. A validation study compared the performance of the collective to that of the actual experts placed in a situation where they interacted with one another to reach a group decision. The simulated collective reached the same conclusion as the actual experts for approximately 90% of the scenarios. In operation, a user may observe individual models as they apply their knowledge to process data, as well as the interaction between individual models. This includes the ability to playback selected time spans and observe models as they respond to various incoming data. Additionally, visualization tools allow users to explore the knowledge within individual expert models and to compare and contrast the knowledge of models corresponding to different experts. This technology is applicable to a broad range of problem domains in which large volumes of dispersed data must be continuously monitored for detection of patterns, events, anomalous behavior, etc. Current prototypes use the Cognitive Collective for detection of security concerns, employing models of experts from relevant domains (e.g. counterintelligence, psychologist). In general, this technology is suited for applications that involve strategic and tactical analysis, situation assessment, diagnosis, fault detection, data interpretation, continuous surveillance, complex pattern recognition and other similar functions. Sandia is making this Cognitive Collective technology available to companies interested in partnering with Sandia to develop near-term and/or future applications.
