NA DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FISCAL YEAR 2003 The Fiscal Year 2003 (FY03) Defense Appropriations Act provides $150 million to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) to support innovative research directed toward eliminating Breast cancer. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Ma teriel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) administer this program. The BCRP is releasing Program Announcements for nine (9) different funding mechanisms in this notification. The name and intent of each funding mechanism, its Program Announcement release date, and submission deadline are as follows: 1) The intent of the Breast Cancer Center of Excellence Awards is to form an integrated consortium of the most highly qualified investigators to accelera te the solution of a major overarching problem in breast cancer research. A Breast Cancer Center of Excellence proposal must address a single, unifying question critical to the prevention, detection, diagnosis, or treatment of breast cancer through the es tablishment of a synergistic, multidisciplinary research program. Breast cancer consumer/survivor groups should be active participants at all levels in these multidisciplinary efforts. Release date February 25, 2002, Pre-proposal Submission Deadline: 5:0 0 p.m. Eastern Time April 3, 2003, Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time August 7, 2003. 2) The intent of the Clinical Research Nurse Awards is to prepare nurses for active careers in collaborative clinical research in breast cancer. Training thro ugh this award may, but is not required to, result in attainment of a more advanced degree. Applicants must have a current nursing license at the time of award negotiation. Release date February 25, 2002, Letter of Intent: April 16, 2003, Proposal Submiss ion: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time May 14, 2003. 3) The intent of Clinical Translational Research Award is to extend recent findings in breast cancer research that offer the potential to revolutionize the practice of breast cancer care. For FY03, Clinical Trans lational Research proposals are only being sought in the areas of chemoprevention and therapeutics. Release date February 25, 2002, Pre-proposal Submission Deadline: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time April 3, 2003, Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time August 7, 2003. 4) The intent of the HBCU/MI Partnership Training Award is to provide assistance at an institutional level. A major goal of this award is to support collaborations between multiple investigators at an applicant HBCU/MI and a collaborating instit ution with established investigators in breast cancer research for the purpose of creating an environment that fosters breast cancer research and in which HBCU/MI faculty investigators will receive training toward establishing successful breast cancer rese arch careers. A long-term goal of the award is to assist HBCU/MI investigators in submitting competitive breast cancer research proposals. Release date February 25, 2002, Pre-proposal Submission Deadline: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time April 3, 2003, Proposal Su bmission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time August 7, 2003. 5) The intent of Idea Awards is to encourage innovative approaches to breast cancer research. Idea Award proposals may represent a new paradigm in the study of breast cancer, challenge existing paradigms, or look at an existing problem from a new perspective. Release date February 25, 2002, Letter of Intent: April 16, 2003, Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time May 14, 2003. 6) The intent of the Innovator Award is to provide accomplished and creativ e individuals from public and private sectors with the funding and freedom to pursue their most innovative plans that could ultimately lead to the eradication of breast cancer. Applicants must be nominated by executives and/or leaders in diverse fields in cluding, but not limited to professional schools, advocacy groups, go vernmental agencies, the media, appropriate professional societies, and/or cancer detection and treatment centers. No self-nominations will be accepted. Release date February 25, 2002, Nomination Deadline: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time April 16, 2003, Invitatio ns to Nominees: May 2003, Nominee Submission Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time August 7, 2003. 7) The intent of the Physician-Scientist Training Award is to provide a mentored training experience that will prepare physicians for active careers i n clinical breast cancer research. Release date February 25, 2002, Letter of Intent: April 16, 2003, Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time May 14, 2003. 8) The intent of Predoctoral Traineeship Awards is to support promising graduate students studyi ng breast cancer under the guidance of a designated mentor. These awards are intended to support the trainee during the dissertation research rather than during rotations or basic course work. Release date February 25, 2002, Letter of Intent: April 16, 20 03, Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time May 14, 2003. 9) The intent of Postdoctoral Awards is to enable recent medical or other doctoral degree graduates to obtain the necessary experience to pursue an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Applications that offer a multidisciplinary training program will be given special consideration. Release date February 25, 2002, Letter of Intent: April 16, 2003, Proposal Submission: 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time May 14, 2003. The BCRP elect ronic Program Announcements have been completely revised for FY03. Detailed descriptions of each of these funding mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the FY03 BCRP Program Announcements corresponding to that fundin g mechanism title. Each Program Announcement can be downloaded from the CDRMP web site (http://cdmrp.army.mil). All applicants will be required to submit one electronic versions of their proposal as a PDF (portable document format) file. All documents m ay be downloaded from the CDMRP website. The website also contains further information about the, BCRP, BCRP awardees, previous BCRP Program Announcements, and other CDMRP sponsored programs and events.
