- Description
- The purpose of this project is to continue data collection through the CDC-funded surveillance registry non-occupational postexposure prophylaxis (nPEP) in the United States, actively solicit case-reports to the registry, and provide data for analysis and technical reports on the frequency and types of non-occupational exposures to HIV, offers and acceptance rates of antiretroviral therapy to attempt interruption of transmission, and clinical course and outcomes of persons with documented HIV exposure. These data will augment ongoing programmatic and research efforts to reduce unanticipated, non-occupational exposures which place persons at risk of HIV transmission and to evaluate the utilization patterns and efficacy of antiretroviral therapy for post-exposure proprhylaxis in these exposures. The data collected will also permit refinement of new CDC guidelines for the use of nPEP, as well as evaluation of the implementation of these guidelines once published. The intended population to be studied are physicians and other health care professionals providing clinical care in the U.S. and their eligible patients who consent for anonmymous reporting of their data to the surveillance system by their care providers.
