Description
The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) has a requirement for the development of algorithms to densify and reposition soil mapping units derived from a 1:1 million digital soils database, digital terrain elevation data, and LANDSAT orthophotomosaics. To our knowledge, NIMA and TAMUS/BREC together have the only copy of a historical set of consistent worldwide soil maps developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Soil Conservation Service (SCS) at a scale of 1:1M. Under an earlier agreement, NIMA and TAMUS/BREC converted these hard copy 1:1M soil maps to digital form. At the end of this study, all ownership rights of the digital database that was developed were vested with TAMUS/BREC. Also under this earlier agreement, a study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of repositioning and enhancing the positional accuracy of the 1:1M soil boundaries and/or creating larger-scale soils data using this digital soils data, new semi-automated landform extraction and delineation techniques, and the computational power of modern computers. Under this new work, NIMA and the university will create algorithms, link existing GIS software, establish soil and landform mapping rules, and program the storage/retrieval procedures needed to create larger-scale landform and soil maps for the world. The main objectives of this agreement are as follows: 1. Develop algorithms to more accurately position and densify the soil mapping units in the 1:1M digital soils database compiled under the original agreement, with an objective digital soils database having a density of soil polygons equivalent to a scale of 1:250K or larger. 2. Develop and document a soils intensification and densification production process, incorporating the algorithms developed for repositioning and densifying the 1:1M digital soil-mapping units. 3. Develop a real-time demonstration of the soils intensification and densification production process, including assisted soils/landform feature identification, delineation, and attribution algorithms. Universities that can obtain the necessary data and perform the required efforts described herein are encouraged to identify themselves and give written notification to the NIMA Agreements Officer. The final determination of suitability for this award is within the discretion of the Government. All responses must be e-mailed to NIMA, Attn: Christina Stans, stanscc@nima.mil by 2:00 P.M., EST, 13 November 2002. It is the responsibility of the sender to confirm if e-emails have been received.
