- The purpose of this announcement is to notify industry of the anticipated acquisition of eight diesel submarines for Taiwan. This announcement is for informational purposes only. No response is desired. Details of the proposed acquisition (quantities, operational requirements, and key events) and the timetable for events relayed herein are contingent on establishment of a Foreign Military Sales case. The program requires the procurement of eight diesel submarines of an existing modern design in a cost-effective manner. Consideration may be given to a limited number of design modifications in order to meet top level requirements. The program requires the design and construction preparation efforts to be performed in CY 2004 through CY 2005, with construction of the first submarine commencing in CY 2006, or earlier. A no later than CY 2010 lead ship delivery is desired. A dditionally, involvement of the China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC) is anticipated as part of the overall acquisition program. A tentative schedule of acquisition events is as follows.  U.S. Navy to hold Industry Day briefing in late 4Q/CY02 to explain the acquisition program and discuss the future Request for Proposal (RFP). Attendance may be restricted only to qualified sources having a demonstrated ability, including actual experience in major Warship design and construction or associated US combat system(s).  Issue draft RFP for design, construction and logistics support for industry review and comment in 4Q/CY02 through 1Q/CY03.  Release formal RFP in 2Q/CY03.  Source selection for design and construction in 3Q/CY03 or 4Q/CY03.
