NIST DOCKET NUMBER: 01-010PA Title: Sub-15-femtosecond Active Synchronization Of Two Passively Mode-locked Ti: Sapphire Oscillators Description: The invention is able to control the relative timing jitter between pulse trains from two independent mode-locked femtosecond lasers to an unprecedented precision using three interleaved phase locked loops. The key technology is the implementation of phase locked loops with successively higher timing resolutions to effectively minimize the timing jitter while preserving the full-scan dynamic range. The timing jitter noise is below 15 femtoseconds, when observed with 1 kHz bandwidth over a period longer than one minute. This is comparable to the pulse duration generated from the state-of-art ultrashort pulse lasers. Control of timing offset between the two pulses, i.e. relatively tuning of one pulse train with respect to the other, is accomplished by all-electronic means, leading to a high degree of stability and repeatability compared to mechanical based systems. The technology can be applied to any mode-locked lasers, even with different repetition rates.
