Description
The National Institute on Drug Abuse is seeking capability statements from qualified organizations having in-house capability of developing, evaluating, and disseminating science education materials for students at the middle school level, teachers, and parents. A project with the following objectives is planned: 1) develop new science education materials in a format involving drug addiction to generate excitement and enthusiasm for science by engaging middle school age children and adults in the process of science; 2) development of corresponding materials for teachers (i.e. a teachers guide) and parents. The materials must comply with the National Science Education Standards available at http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/nses/ for specific use in the classroom; and 3) development of CD-ROM and print materials. The primary goals of the CD-ROM and these materials will be: 1) to develop new materials for use at the middle school level that are consistent with the NIDA's Brain Power Junior Scientist; 2) to improve science education and literacy among the targeted audiences, particularly as it relates to how drugs act in the brain and body; 3) to foster an enthusiasm among children for science; and 4) to ensure that students understand that science is a dynamic discipline that involves curiosity and questioning. It is anticipated that the proposed CD-ROM materials will be field tested in schools which represent the intellectual and diversity spectrum found in middle schools across the nation. All of the materials will be in the public domain and will not be copyrighted. Interested organizations must be able to perform the following types of tasks: 1) develop age appropriate, colorful, creative and interesting science education materials and CD-ROMS that will appeal to middle school-age children; 2) develop CD-ROMs to reinforce important concepts with hands-on activities that make the concepts more exciting and engaging to the students; 3) write curricula that adheres to the National Science Education Standards and is easily incorporated into the usual middle school curriculum; 4) develop materials for teachers that can be used as a guide and that will include classroom activities; 5) develop materials for parents that provide information which can be used to reinforce what the children are learning in the classroom, and which include science-related activities for the entire family; 6) develop and conduct evaluation protocol of the educational materials and CD-ROMs. Interested organizations must be able to demonstrate, in any capability statement submitted, extensive experience in the following areas: 1) the ability to perform the above tasks, and specific expertise in the development of curriculum materials for middle school grades; 2) experience in the development of materials for teachers and parents; 3) a knowledge of the National Science Education Standards; 4) experience in the development and production of interactive educational CD-ROMs and print materials, graphics; 5) expertise in evaluation and assessment of curricula; 6) dissemination of information and materials to teachers and 7) experience in preparation of OMB clearances. THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS. This notice is for information purposes only and does not commit the Government to any contractual agreement.
