- NA GWIR-Low-Level-Chemical-Exposures Gulf War Illnesses Research: Low Level Chemical Exposures In accordance with the Defense Appropriations Act, 2001 (HR 4576), Sec. 8154, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command is soliciting proposals for original research among persons who served on active duty in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during the Persian Gulf War on: (1) possible health effect of exposure to low levels of hazardous chemicals, including chemical warfare agents and other substances, and (2) the individual susceptibility of humans to such exposure under environmentally controlled conditions. Proposals that do not meet the specifications of this solicitation, including addressing both (1) and (2), will not be considered for funding. One or more proposals are expected to be competitively awarded only to medical research institution(s) for a total cost, including direct and indirect costs, of up to $1,600,000 for all awards combined. Proposed research may extend to four years but timeliness of research results will be considered in the award selection(s). For guidelines on proposal submission, click here; the main body of the proposal may not exceed 20 pages. In addition to the evaluation criteria contained in the Broad Agency Announcement (BAA 02-1), projects will be selected on the basis of scientific merit and relevance to protecting the health of deployed forces.
