- Description
- PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Statistics Canada?s generalized automated coding software: ACTR (?Automated Coding by Text Recognition?) uses a data-driven approach to the assignment of standard codes from text. ACTR includes tools for maintaining a database of textual entries known to correlate strongly with a particular code. Because it performs coding based on text retrieval, ACTR is independent of the coding strategy and language in use. ACTR may be used in batch mode to perform unattended coding of well-defined cases, and in interactive mode for the coding of ?problem? cases. ACTR will be used for a CE production system at the Census Bureau. FEATURES IDENTIFY SOURCES OF CODE AND TEXT CORRELATION: To use ACTR, a coding database must first be created. This is entirely under the control of the user, which allows ACTR to be easily custom tailored to your application. Sources of text and code correlation vary, but popular sources include captured text from previous surveys as well as coding reference manuals. Regardless of what source is used to create the database, ACTR allows updates at any time. As a result the longer ACTR is used in a survey, the greater the coding success rate becomes. CREATE CODING DATABASE: ACTR provides a complete set of tools for both batch and interactive creation and updating of coding databases. These tools readily allow for ?What if? analysis to be performed while still in the process of defining a coding strategy. MODIFY PARSING STRATEGY? At the centre of ACTR?s text retrieval capabilities is a text parsing process which is highly user directed. Users have control over such considerations as character mappings, trivial words, prefixes, suffixes, etc. The system also allows users to control the order of the parsing process.
