Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with The South American Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR), Ministry of Health, a contract to conduct population based active surveillance for cryptococcosis in Gauteng province, South Africa. These services will include, but is not limited to the following (1) collect isolates, complete cryptococcal surveillance initiative case report, and maintain database; (2) deliver isolates collected to CDC Laboratory; (3) submit database and cryptococcosis trend reports on a quarterly basis. The South American Institute for Medical Research (NHL, National Health Laboratory System) is the only known institution in Gauteng province (Johannesburg) that can provide the necessary infrastructure to perform this project. This project requires that cryptococcal isolates be collected on a regular basis from all laboratories in the province. All public health laboratories in the province operate under the auspices of the National Health Laboratory (NHL), so the participation of the NHL is critical to ensuring that isolates from the public hospitals can be collected. The NHL Central Laboratory, which is the reference laboratory for the province, possesses the staff and expertise so that isolates can be collected and maintained appropriately. Furthermore, the project also requires that demographic and clinical information be collected from medical records of patients with cryptococcosis. SAIMR faculty participate in teaching and providing clinical service in many hospitals in Gauteng province and have collaborated with many investigators in these hospitals on other projects, which will ensure a more complete date collection for surveillance purposes. The period of performance is twenty-four months. It is anticipated that the contract will be awarded around August 31, 2002 with performance to begin September 1, 2002. The scheduled solicitation issue date is approximately June 12, 2002. The solicitation will also be posted at this website (http://www.eps.gov/) on or around June 12, 2002. Any amendments issued to this solicitation will also be available at the same website. Hardcopies of the solicitation and any amendments issued will not be mailed to the offerors. The North American Industry Classification (NAICS) code for this solicitation is 561110. Notes 22 and 26*****
