Description: Heritage site surface collection, testing and recording in the Cave Gulch Wildfire Area, Helena National Forest. Project concerns critical archaeological fieldwork at vulnerable historic mining ruins located within the perimeter of the 2000 Cave Gulch Wildfire. Work includes controlled collection of surgace artifacts exposed to illegal collecting at 3 mine sites; small scale subsurface excavation within or near stone ruins at 20 mine sites, and enhanced recordation of intact stone features (house foundations, bread ovens) at 6 sites. Data will be used to complete National Register significance determintions, to guide ongoing fire restoration activities, and as a baseline for future monitoring of this fragile ruins.
