Description
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) in conjunction with The National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Neurobiology (LM) plans to procure a AMT XR-100 CCD Camera system bottom mount with Advanced Microscopy Techniques Corporation (AMT), 3 Electronics Avenue, Danvers, MA 01923. The NINDS Electron Microscope (EM) Facility is an Institute-wide facility providing scientists in the DIR with access to state-of-the-art electron microscope equipment. There are currently two JEOL transmission electron microscopes being used by approximately twenty-five (25) scientists. The Facility has been generating about 10,000 micrographs a year. Due to personnel changes, the EM Facility no longer has a photography technician and the backlog photography work is drastically increasing. The proposed CCD Camera will collect images in digital format, therefore, bypassing the conventional darkroom developing and printing. Electron micrographs can be printed right after the microscopy session without a waiting period. The laboratory estimates that more than 90% of the users photography needs will be met by this digital camera. Also, the CCD Camera will make it possible for projects like serial reconstruction and tomography possible. MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS: Image Acquisition Interface: 1) Bottom mount configuration; a) 3/4 photographic field of view imaging with 61x61 mm phosphor; b) 24mm square pixels at phosphor; c) custom engineered, high throughput (f/1), low distortion (<1% lens); d) lens resolution as determined by MTF greater than 50% at 100 lb/mm over entire field: 2) 2600x2600 pixel, high definition with; a) scientific grade, progressive scan sensor; b) 12 bit ADC; c) 20 MHz output; d) maximum viewing speed: survey mode (4x4 binning) 6 fps. Focus mode (1x1) 2 fps; e) 2624x2624 square pixel resolution: f) real-time frame integration for up to 16 bit deep recorded images and; g) cooling devices and optics outside the TEM vacuum and immune from contamination. Digital Image Acquisition Hardware and Software: a) LVDS digital interface for camera data transfer and control; b) graphical user interface designed for good visibility and ease of use; c) automatic and manual gray scale adjustment; d) high precision dark current and gain correction for recorded images and; e) Ulead PhotoImpact software for image enhancement, batch operations and archiving. The CCD camera offered by Advanced Microscopy Techniques is specifically designed for collecting multiple images in the electron microscope. The AMT XR-100 CCD camera is specifically designed to work with the JEOL 100 CX and 200 CX interchangeably. Images collected in the computer running the camera can be directly saved at full resolution and gray scale in TIFF format directly legible in Photoshop running on Apple computer. The information content of these images will be at least 2600X2600 pixels at 16 bits (>7MB image). A 61X61mm phosphor detector will give a field of views at least 70% the size of that with 3 1/4 inch film. Images will be magnified no more that 2 X onto the surface of the phosphor which collects the image. These camera specifications are all necessary to optimize the collection of EM images over the most commonly used magnification range of the microscope. The camera can be switched easily from one microscope to another by the operator. In the past, contamination of the camera chip by vacuum oils has been a problem but, the AMT has designed a camera that, except for collecting phosphor, lies completely outside the vacuum system. The camera has a fax scan mode that is needed to focus quickly on the specimen before images are collected. The camera chip is air cooled, therefore no water connections are necessary. Advanced Microscopy Techniques Corporation is the only known source to the NINDS research that can provide the aforementioned instrument. This notice is not a request for competitive quotation. However, if any interested party believes it can meet the above requirements, it may submit a statement of capabilities. The capability statement and any other furnished information must be in writing and must contain material in sufficient detail to allow NINDS to determine if the party can fully meet the requirements. Capability statements must be received in the contracting office by 1:00 PM EST, (local Washington DC time) on April 12, 2002. If you have any questions, please submit them in writing to Malinda Holdcraft on electronic mail at holdcram@exchange.nih.gov or by fax, 301-402-4513. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed requirement based on responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Information received shall be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. No collect calls will be accepted. Faxed capability statements will not be accepted. If submitting capability statements, please provide one original and two copies to Malinda Holdcraft, NIH/NCI/RCB, 6120 Executive Blvd. Suite 6072, Rockville, Maryland 20852-7194.
